This exquisite paperweight features a mid-19th century French ivory cameo and a Spanish ivory hand amulet, dated about 1600, known in Spain as a "higa", with lightly touching thumb and index finger in the "mano cornuta", a potent gesture against evil. (both from the British Museum). But in this collage, the hand seems to be offering a vintage botanical blue tulip to the mysterious lady, while a tiny Victorian cherub looks on mischievously. The background is of a blue and grey 19th century hand-printed wallpaper pattern.
