Royal Turnip No.2 (8 X 10 in)
Royal Turnip No.2 (8 X 10 in)
The design of this elegant and mysterious pair of plates is not easily deciphered by the casual eye, filled with unexpected combinations of visual elements, a closer inspection reveals the lowly (yet celebrated!) turnip at the center of each plate, decorated by an intricately carved cameo brooch, circa late 1800s.
The Royal Turnip No. 2 design treats precious emerald jewels and pearls alongside small white radishes and purple and ivory broccoli flowers as equal royalty, creating a mysterious juxtaposition of botanical and decorative arts.
The backdrop used in both plates is taken from the rarely seen, Zuber wallpaper pattern ‘Cantilène’, circa 1831, which features intricate faux lace voile drapery. Zuber is believed to be the last factory in the world that produces woodblock printed wallpapers, their patterns, many originally from the 1800s, are still being manufactured by hand. Plate backings may vary as each is handmade from individually selected unique materials.
For decorative purposes only, do not submerge in water. Wipe with a damp washcloth to clean.
This plate is 8" X 10" and weighs 0.95 lbs.
